Like many families, homeschooling has changed my life for the better! However, the process of discovery was truly a journey. You see, my teen son is special needs and faced struggles with reading, and also has Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). He struggled with school starting in first grade. While he had a wonderful teacher, she was new to her position and did not know what to do to best help my child. He was a reluctant learner, avoiding asking questions and seeking help.
We moved for second grade, and he enjoyed school much more at his new school, but still remained behind and was not learning at grade level. Third grade came along and he had a teacher that worked hard to accommodate and challenge my son so that he started to learn and understand basic reading, writing, and math, and then COVID hit. This became a point where I saw the largest decline in his learning and the point where I needed to step in and help more one-on-one with his learning, and eventually, remove him from public/charter schooling to homeschool full-time.
My son has been homeschooled for the last three years and has developed and grown so much with homeschooling! Why do I tell you all of this? I am just like you. I want to educate my son with the best tools and strategies possible. Many children thrive in public school and use standardized processes for learning to read, but my son and I were not this type of learners. Children deserve to enjoy learning, and to learn in the methodology that works best for them.
As my passion for homeschooling and learning continued to grow, I began my journey with PaperPie. This has allowed me to work and support my learner with innovative and fun books, learning tools and STEAM kits. We know that no child is the same, so we offer over 2,500 books and resources to families to meet each learner where they are! I love working with and providing families with individual learning resources for their learners, as well as their curriculum. I also provide curriculum for homeschooling programs, teach families how to get funds for resources, and help with learning processes for families of all backgrounds. Throughout my journey, I have become known as the “Book Lady” – your resource to support your entire family through their educational journey just like I do at home with my son.
My name is Autumn Palmer. I am a proud advocate for learning. A hard-working business owner. A dedicated teacher. And, most important, a loving mother doing my best to help my child reach their potential and find joy in life. I look forward to helping your family as well!
