You know your child(ren) best and are the BEST teacher for your child(ren).  It is best practice to figure out your child(ren)’s learning style.  There are four learning styles, including kinesthetic (hands-on), auditory, visual, and verbal.  Each homeschool curriculum serves one or more of these learning styles.  Your state homeschool resource center/bookstore is a great place to start to learn and browse the various homeschool curricula available.  There are online resources, such as CathyDuffy.com, that provide lists and details about homeschool curricula, that may be a good starting point.  The key is not to rush into purchasing homeschool curricula until you have a good grasp on your child(ren)’s learning style(s).  Also, keep in mind that it is not necessary to purchase “boxed” curriculum, meaning that all subjects are provided by one curriculum brand.  As the parent, you are permitted to select various curriculum brands per subject.

It is common for the terms curriculum and supplemental materials to be used interchangeably.  However, they are not the same, but can be used simultaneously while homeschooling.  Curriculum provides a comprehensive study of all concepts necessary per academic subject.  Supplemental materials help to solidify understanding of and/or review a concept(s).  Using supplemental materials only can inadvertently create “gaps” in your child(ren)’s knowledge base.

Deschooling is recommended for children who have spent any time in a public school setting.  It is a time to decompress and reset from the demands placed on the child while in the public school setting. It is recommended to deschool one month for every year the child(ren) have been in public school   During this time, the family could adjust daily schedules and routines, visit a local library(ies) and/or museum(s), explore interests/hobbies, and/or identify the child(ren)’s learning style(s).  Unschooling is a homeschooling style that is child-led.  The child(ren) identify interests and explore them in depth for an unlimited amount of time.  Themes (i.e. insects) can be researched for deeper understanding and/or applied to subjects, such as math (i.e. counting, multiplication).

An Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) provides parents in some states the opportunity to receive a portion of the educational funding that typically is provided to public schools.  The ESA funding can be used to purchase curriculum, supplemental materials, educational supplies, and other related educational expenses.

Each state has its own laws regarding homeschooling.  Contact your local state educational department and/or your local homeschool resource center for more information.  HSLDA.org also has each state’s homeschooling laws on its website.
